Although North Carolina was hardly known as a home for the arts, by the 1850s, homegrown arts were flourishing, especially poetry and music. From the simple but moving lines of spirituals and folk ballads to the formal verses of poets, black and white North Carolinians found ways to express their joys, their sorrows, and their hopes for the future.
