Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Shallotte

town in SW Brunswick County served by post office since 1837. Appears on the Morse-Breese map, 1843. Inc. 1899. Named for Shallotte River, on which it is located. Alt. 33.

Shallotte Creek

rises in S Brunswick County and flows W into Shallotte River.

Shallotte Inlet

SW Brunswick County between Big Beach and Hales Beach connecting Long Bay in the Atlantic Ocean with the mouths of Shallotte River, Shallotte Creek, and Saucepan Creek. Provides access to the Intracoastal Waterway from the Atlantic Ocean.

Shallotte River

rises in SW Brunswick County and flows NE and S into the Atlantic Ocean through Shallotte Inlet. Appears on the Moseley map, 1733. May have been named for shallot, an onionlike plant growing in the vicinity.

Shallotte Sound

SW Brunswick County between Brantley Island on the mainland and Hales Beach running parallel to and S of the Intracoastal Waterway. Narrow and approx. 1½ mi. long.

Shallotte Township

SW Brunswick County.

Shallow Ford

in Little Tennessee River in N Macon County.

Shallowbag Bay

a bay in Roanoke Sound off the NE shore of Roanoke Island, E Dare County. The bay forms the harbor at the town of Manteo. In the late eighteenth century, it was referred to as Shalon-bas Bay (French chalonbas, "low trawl net"). Roanoke voyages-period vessel Elizabeth II, a reproduction, rests in bay.
