Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Shacklefoot Island

See Brown's Island.

Shackleford Banks

one of the Outer Banks, SE Carteret County; approx. 8½ mi. long. Named for John Shackle ford, who, with Enoch Ward, purchased the "Sea Banks" in 1713. See also Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Shackleford Point

the W tip of Shackle ford Banks, SE Carteret County, extending into Beaufort Inlet. The community of Shackleford formerly existed near the point.

Shacktown

community in SE Yadkin County between North Deep Creek and South Deep Creek. Named for B. G. "Shack" Colvard, local businessman. Previously produced tobacco baskets.

Shad Coye

central Craven County in SE end of Hog Island adjacent to Neuse River. Approx. ¼ mi. wide.

Shad Point

on the NE mainland of Hyde County extending into the mouth of Long Shoal Bay.

Shaddock's Creek

is formed in SE Moore County by the junction of McDeeds and Mill Creeks. It flows E through Crystal Lake into Little River. The name was originally applied also to present McDeeds Creek. Named for Thomas Shaddock, an eighteenth-century settler.

Shaddox Creek

rises in SE Chatham County and flows S into Cape Fear River.

Shade Branch

rises in N Madison County and flows SW into Martin Branch.

Shadepen Branch

rises in NW Buncombe County and flows SE into North Fork [Swannanoa River].
