Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Carteret Township

former township of NE Carteret County. Previously a part of Straits Township, now largely Merrimon Township.

Carters Creek

rises in NE Davie County near Hillsdale and flows 3 mi. SE into Yadkin River. Formerly known as Linville Creek.

Carters Falls

SW Surry County on the Yadkin River near Elkin.

Carters Mills

community in N Moore County on Bear Creek. Named for S. M. Carter, in whose house the post office was first opened. A mill there was est. about 1790 by Nicholas Nall, who also had a tavern there on the old Salem-Fayetteville road.

Carters Mountain

extends NW in N Wilkes County between North Prong Roaring River and Middle Prong Roaring River.

Carters Ridge

S Mitchell County between Grassy Creek and North Toe River.

Cartersville

community in S Duplin County.

Carthage

town and county seat, central Moore County. Authorized to be laid off and inc. 1796. Name changed to Fagansville in 1806 for Richardson Fagin, sheriff of Moore County, 1785-87, and on whose land the town was located; changed back to Carthage, 1818. Produces textiles. Alt. 575.

Carthage Township

central Moore County.

Cartledge Creek

rises in central Richmond County on W edge of town of Ellerbe and flows SW into Pee Dee River. Named for Edmund Cartledge, who owned land in the vicinity prior to 1758.
