Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Thunderhead Mountain

on the Swain County, N.C.-Blount County, Tenn., line in Great Smoky Mountains National Park near lat. 35°34'08" N., long. 83°42'24" W. Alt. 5,530.

Thunderhole Creek

rises in S Watauga County approx. 2 mi. W of the town of Blowing Rock and flows S into N Caldwell County, where it enters Johns River.

Thunderstruck Knob

in E Yancey County at the E end of Bee Ridge.

Thunderstruck Ridge

N Jackson County between Polecat Branch and Soco Creek.

Thurman

community in E Craven County on Neuse River. Alt. 26. Settled about 1850 and named for Allen G. Thurman (1813-95), member of Congress (1845-47) and later a senator from Ohio. His mother was the daughter of Nathaniel Allen, nephew and adopted son of Joseph Hewes of Edenton.

Thurmond

community in NE Wilkes County at the Surry County line.

Thurston

community in SE Alexander County served by post office, 1881-1902.

Thurz Mountain

N Buncombe County NW of Wiley Mountain.

Tiancok

an Indian village of the Chawanoac tribe; appears on the Comberford map, 1657, located in what is now N Hertford County between Potecasi Creek and Meherrin River near the Chowan River. See also Cokey Swamp.
