Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Place Description
South Lowell

community in NW Durham County between Buffalo and Horse Creeks on the N side of North Fork Little River.

South Mills

town in NW Camden County; inc. 1883, but not active in municipal affairs. Prior to 1800 the community was known as New Lebanon because the junipers that formerly grew in the area adjacent to the Dismal Swamp suggested the biblical reference to the tall cedars of Lebanon. Post office was New Lebanon from 1797 until 1839, when the name was changed to South Mills because waters from a spillway at the S end of the Dismal Swamp Canal were used to turn wheels of mills there.

South Mills Township

N Camden County.

South Mountains

a range of mountains extending from NE Rutherford County into SW Burke and N Cleveland Counties. Known by the Cherokee Indians as Oakanoahs

South Mountains Wildlife Management Area

in SE Burke County. 17,700 acres. Jointly owned by private interests and the town of Morganton. Est. 1952-53.

South Muddy Creek

rises in SE McDowell County and flows NE to join North Muddy Creek near the Burke County line to form Muddy Creek.

South Point

N extremity of Pea Island in E Dare County. Lies at junction of Oregon Inlet and Atlantic Ocean.

South Point Township

SE Gaston County.

South Prong

stream, rises in S Haywood County and flows NE into Shining Creek.

South Prong Creek

rises in E Guilford County and flows NE into SW Alamance County, where it enters Stinking Quarter Creek.
