Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Place Description
Big Mountain Gap

central Transylvania County in Big Mountain Ridge, Pisgah National Forest. Alt. approx. 3,060.

Big Mountain Ridge

central Transylvania County, extends about 2 mi. in a north-south direction. Bounded on the N by Three Forks Mountain. The ridge is a part of Pisgah National Forest.

Big Oak Gap

W Macon County on Fire Gap Ridge.

Big Peachtree Bald

in the Valley River Mountains on the Cherokee-Clay county line.

Big Peachtree Creek

rises in E Franklin County and flows SE into Nash County, where it joins Little Peachtree Creek in forming Stony Creek.

Big Pine

community on Big Pine Creek in S Madison County. Alt. 2,500. Post office, Big Pine Creek, est. prior to 1882.

Big Pine Creek

is formed in S Madison County by the junction of North Fork and South Fork and flows NE into French Broad River opposite Barnard.

Big Pine Creek Township

former township in SW Madison County; now township no. 12.

Big Pine Fishing Gut

a water-filled ditch adjoining the Neuse River in E Durham County.

Big Pine Mountain

S Yancey County between Beech Nursery Creek and Big Poplar Creek.
