Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

N central Sampson County.

Belwood

community in NE Cleveland County. Alt. 990. Served by post office, 1882-1954.

Bems Creek

rises in W Halifax County and flows SE into Little Fishing Creek.

Ben Bolen Creek

rises in SW Ashe County and flows W into Three Top Creek.

Ben Cove Branch

rises in E Jackson County and flows SE into Sols Creek.

Ben Creek

rises in N Macon County and flows NW into Cold Spring Creek.

Ben Johnson Lake

on Eno River, central Orange County. Formed 1955. Covers 15 acres; max. depth 12 ft. Source of water for town of Hillsborough. Known as Hillsboro Lake prior to February 1956.

Benaja

community in S Rockingham County served by post office, 1870-1917 and 1921-33. Alt. 687. Store, depot, watering station there served the railroad. Named for the creek.

Benaja Creek

rises in NE Guilford County and flows NE into Rockingham County, where it enters Haw River. Original name was Benajar. Believed to have been named for the tropical ben tree, plus ajar in the sense of "out of place."

Bench Mountain

SW Watauga County, extends NE from White Rocks along the head of Spice Bottom Creek.
