Poorhouse Run

rises in S Greene County and flows NE into Contentnea Creek. Earlier called Caswells Branch. Name derived from the fact that it runs by the former County Home.

community in SE Polk County served by post office, 1881-1914. Named for Green River crossing.

E Watauga County between Chestnut Branch and Elk Creek. Alt. approx. 2,350.

Poors Knots

community in S Wilkes County served by post office, 1888-1916.

Pop Castle

W Vance County approx. 1 mi. W of the town of Kittrell. Popecastle Inn was est. there approx. 1734, and local usage changed the name to Pop Castle. Racetrack, cockpit, and tavern were adjuncts of the inn; use of the racetrack began during the Revolution, and the main building of the inn was dismantled after the Civil War.

community in central Robeson County.

Pope Air Force Base

NW Cumberland County, was est. during World War I and named in honor of Lt. Harley Halbert Pope, who died in a postwar aircraft accident on the Cape Fear River near Fayetteville, January 7, 1919.
