Place Description
Masonboro

community in E New Hanover County on Masonboro Sound. Appears on the Collet map, 1770. Named because members of the order of Masons in the late eighteenth century built houses there. A popular resort in the early and middle nineteenth century.

Masonboro Inlet

E New Hanover County opposite the mouth of Hewlets Creek between the waters of Middle and Masonboro Sounds. Shole Inlet, on the Moseley map, 1733 (Shoal on the Mouzon map, 1775), was at the site, but it closed after 1775. An inlet nearby, Deep Inlet, opened by 1808 and closed after 1833. Masonboro Inlet opened by 1833 at the old Shole or Shoal Inlet site. Took its name from the resort community of Masonboro S of the mouth of Hewlets Creek.
