Smiling Tharu woman

This Tharu woman is wearing a western-style dress shirt draped on top of her head, probably to protect herself from sun. The Tharu people are indigenous people living in the Surkhet Valley in the west mountain region; Chitwan Valley, Dang Valley, Deukhuri Valley, Sindhuli and Udyapur in the Inner Terai Valleys of Nepal; and the Terai plains on the border of Nepal and India. This woman also wears a nose-ring, red tika on her forehead, and a beaded necklace made up of several strings of beads tied together and woven through big golden balls at different points. These are customary accessories for Tharu women.
