Visual symbols can also provide a way to communicate a schedule to a student with ASD. Visual schedules offer numerous benefits to students with autism — even those with well-developed verbal communication skills. The schedules provide a structure for the day and help students understand and predict what’s coming next. As a result, students aren’t faced with the kinds of surprises that can lead to challenging behavior. Visual schedules can also motivate students by communicating that a less-preferred activity will be followed by a desired activity. Pictures of clocks can be added to indicate the length of time to be spent on each activity.
