Rama and Sita sit at coronation ceremony in Ayudhya palace (Thai Ramayana mural)

Rama and Sita have returned to the Ayudhya palace for their coronation, as seen in a mural detail at the Emerald Buddha Temple. Rama and Sita sit separately on high columned platforms back in their royal pavillion at Ayudhya. Large gold chalices are set in front of Rama on a blue platform. Below the platforms on a tiled floor, monkey kings sit attentively on their knees to watch Rama’s coronation.

In the Ramayana, Rama’s brother has ruled Ayudhya wisely in Rama’s absence, but he is happy to see Rama return and take the throne as its rightful owner. An elaborate coronation ceremony is held at the Ayudhya palace.
