Niche statue of Jesus in Atotonilco, Mexico

A small statue of a suffering Jesus Christ stands in a church niche. The figure is leaning on a stone column and shows the bloody scars of a whip's end. Fresh flowers have been placed in front of the niche. Atotonilco is a small village near San Miguel de Allende in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. The village is known as a spiritual center and boasts of a church constructed in 1740 that is famous for its very graphic depictions of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. The village expands every year for religious holidays as thousands of pilgrims descend upon the village to visit the church and its surroundings.
