Nepalese woman with her child

A Tharu women is holding a baby on her lap. The child has a dark tika (spot) on his forehead. People believe that dark tika can ward off evil spirits.The reed-wall behind the woman is typical of those found in Tharu houses in Chitwan valley, Nepal. Tharu people are native to Chitwan valley in south central Nepal. They now live in many villages and towns around Chitwan National Park, which is famous worldwide for its one-horned rhinoceros.
