Atlanta in Ruins, Circa 1864

Depicted are the runis of a depot that was blown up on Sherman's departure. The destruction was part of Sherman's March, also known as the Georgia and Carolinas Campaigns, which lasted 1864-1865. Sherman and his troops started in Georgia, then made their way up to North Carolina. The march consisted of burning farms and plantations; destroying railroads, buildings, and sometimes homes; and freeing enslaved Black people.
