CARTERET COUNTY


Carteret was formed in 1722 from Craven. It was named in honor of Sir John Carteret afterwards (1744) Earl of Granville, one of the Lords Proprietors. It is in the eastern section of the State and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Onslow, Jones and Craven counties and on the banks by Hyde County. The present land area is 519.84 square miles. The population from the 2010 Census was 66,469. Of that population, 59,346 were white, 4,041 were black or African American, 316 were American Indian, 580 were Asian, 67 were Pacific Islander and 812 were of a different race. Another 1,307 were reported to be of two or more races and 2,241 were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Beaufort, established in 1723 and named in honor of Henry Duke of Beaufort, is the county seat.

Parts of Carteret County are in the White Oak River Basin and parts are in the Neuse River Basin. It is in the Coastal Plain region.
