Professor Wallace Caldwell (1890–1961) with unnamed domestic

In this black and white photograph, a young black woman is serving Professor Caldwell at a dining table. The college servants were all men, but African American women often worked for faculty families. Due to domestic servants’ low wages, even modestly paid professors could hire servants.
