Political meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico

Dozens of people congregate in a square in front of a public building. The sign on the building reads "The people reclaim their government." During the middle decades of the twentieth century there was little free and open participation of the masses in the political process. The only way to participate in the political arena was to arrange informal public protests that aired the grievances of the people. Guadalajara was founded soon after the conquest of Mexico in the sixteenth century and has grown to be one of Mexico's primary cities. It is the second largest city in Mexico, behind Mexico City, and is the industrial capital of the country. The city is famous for its manufacture of hardware and software for Mexico's technology industry. It is also a popular tourist destination for its blend of colonial sites and modern conveniences.
