Milton Presbyterian Church interior

Interior of Milton Presbyterian Church in Milton, North Carolina, built in 1837. The pews were made by the famous furniture maker Thomas Day, whose shop was located nearby. Day and his wife Aquilla, who were Black, were permitted to sit in the pews among the white worshipers rather than in the balcony. Black people attending white churches (if they were even allowed) typically had to sit in a different area of the church than the white people, like the balcony.
