The site was described as Mulberry Fields, a former Cherokee Indian area, in a report of Moravian surveyors in 1752. Appears as Mulberry Fields on the Collet map, 1770. Produces furniture, mirrors, textiles, apparel, hosiery, processed poultry, and dairy products. |

It was named for James Compton, Earl of Northampton (1687-1754). Area: 544 sq. mi. County seat: Jackson, with an elevation of 131 ft. Townships are Gaston, Jackson, Kirby, Oconeechee, Pleasant Hill, Rich Square, Roanoke, Seaboard, and Wiccacanee.
