It flows se, forming in part the Durham-Granville and Durham-Wake county lines; then through Wake, Johnston, Wayne, Lenoir, and Craven Counties, forming in part the Craven-Pamlico and Carteret-Pamlico county lines before entering Pamlico Sound. Named in 1584 by Arthur Barlowe for the Neusiok Indians. The Tuscarora Indians called the river Gow-ta-no (pine in water).
