Meherrin Riverrises in Virginia and flows S into North Carolina, where it forms the Hertford-Northampton county line for approx. 9 mi. and then flows SE across Hertford County into Chowan River. Appears as Pochike River on the Comberford map, 1657, and as Wayanock on the Hack map, 1684. Parker's Ferry has been operated across the Meherrin River near its mouth since the early years of the twentieth century.
