| Leaksville | former town in N Rockingham County on Dan and Smith Rivers. Alt. 700. Inc. 1874. Named for Revolutionary War veteran John Leak, who owned a plantation there before 1797. A post office est. there in 1817. In 1793 the General Assembly directed that a town to be named Danville be laid out at the site as a tobacco inspection station; in 1797 commissioners were appointed "to build and improve the Town of Leaksville in accordance with the plan drawn up by Abraham Philips." Philips had been a member of the commission appointed in 1793 to lay out the town of Danville. In 1967 Leaksville was merged with Draper and Spray, which see, to form the town of Eden, which see. |
