"Churchman" was a term applied to those who were members or supporters of the Church of England [3], or Anglican Church. It was in use in England by 1677 and in North Carolina by 1711, when missionary John Urmston observed that there were a few churchmen serving in the Assembly. Differences between churchmen and dissenters [4] contributed to the Cary Rebellion [5], which erupted in 1711. With the end of the American Revolution [6] and the disestablishment of the Anglican Church, the term, as it had been understood, ceased to be meaningful.
