CAMDEN COUNTY

Camden was formed in 1777 from Pasquotank. It was named in honor of Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden, who was one of the staunchest friends of the Americans in the British Parliament. It is in the northeastern section of the State and is bounded by the state of Virginia, Albemarle Sound, and Pasquotank, Gates, and Currituck counties. The present land area is 240.68 square miles. The population from the 2010 Census was 9,980. Of that population, 8,193 were white, 1,316 were black or African American, 33 were American Indian, 146 were Asian, 5 were Pacific Islander and 74 were of a different race. Another 213 were reported to be of two or more races and 215 were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Camden is the county seat.

Camden County is in the Pasquotank River Basin and is in the Coastal Plain region.
