Whitson, Edward Maxwell

Edward Maxwell Whitson, cartoonist and illustrator, was born in Asheville, the son of William Roberts and Ida May Keith Whitson. In 1915–16 he attended The University of North Carolina, where he drew cartoons for the student yearbook, Yackety Yack, and the humor magazine, Tar Baby. Afterwards he became a cartoonist and illustrator for various magazines and newspapers. Among the state papers that used his work were the Asheville Citizen, the Asheville Review, and the Asheville Times. Popular magazines of the time that published his cartoons included Judge and Country Gentleman, while many others presented his commercial work.

He died at his home in Holly Hill, Fla., survived by his wife.
