The first Mexican author and intellectual honored with a Nobel Prize, Octavio Paz (1914–1998) was one of the most prominent Latin American intellectuals and writers of the twentieth century. A career diplomat, Paz was in a unique position while abroad to ruminate on Mexican life and culture. He resigned as ambassador to India in 1968 in protest over the bloody repression of the student movement at Tlatelolco. His most well known work is the Labyrinth of Solitude.
