Weavervilletown in N central Buncombe County. The site was referred to as Pine Cabbin in eighteenth-century records of the county and a little later as Salem Camp Ground. A post office est. there in 1850 was named Reems Creek and changed to Weaverville in 1873. Inc. 1875. Named for Rev. Montraville Weaver, who gave land and money in 1872 to est. Weaver College (closed in 1933). From 1919 until 1921, the town was named Elkwood. Alt. 2,300. Produces textiles.
