Louisburgtown and county seat, central Franklin County on Tar River. Alt. 280. Authorized to be laid out and named Lewisburg, 1779. Named for French king Louis XVI, to whose court Benjamin Franklin (for whom the county was named) was then American representative. Both spellings occur in early records, the present form soon becoming the only one used. Home of Louisburg College. Produces lumber and fabricated metals.
