Camp LejeuneMarine base in S Onslow County on both sides of New River, adjacent to Jacksonville. Construction began in 1942. Known first as New River Marine Base; later named for Maj. Gen. John A. Lejeune (1867-1942), World War I Marine commandant. The base covers 173 sq. mi., of which 26,000 acres are underwater. Onslow Beach, a part of the base, is used for amphibious assault training.
