Named for Totero or Tutelo Indians, who lived in the foothills of the Blue Ridge in the seventeenth century but who subsequently migrated to E Virginia and later to Pennsylvania and elsewhere. |

Tow String Creek | rises in NE Swain County and flows SW into Oconaluftee River. Named because an old woman who lived on the creek made tow strings for the settlers. |
