Hayes (1804-64), a member of the General Assembly who was instrumental in the formation of the county. Fort Hembree, ¾ mi. nw, was one of the forts at which Gen. Winfield Scott, in command of U.S. forces, gathered the Cherokee Indians before moving them W in 1838. Produces lumber and apparel.
