Welch RidgeN Swain County in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, extends SW from Silers Bald to Little Tennessee River. Its center is near lat. 35°31'40" N., long. 83°35'30" W.
Welch's Bluffappears on the Moseley map, 1733, on the W side of Cape Fear River in present Brunswick County between the mouth of Indian Creek and Eagle Island. Possibly named for James Welch, who owned land in the vicinity.

Welcomecommunity in N Davidson County. Alt. 860. Formerly called Hinklesville for the Hinkle family residing there. Disagreement arose over selection of a name for the new railroad depot; ultimately, Welcome was selected, either because the decision makers were impressed by the "Welcome" sign over the door of the community store or because, during the dispute over the name, one man declared, "Everybody's welcome here."

Weldontown in N Halifax County on Roanoke River. Inc. 1843. The Collet map, 1770, shows "Weldans," perhaps referring to the family name of the owner of the land. Town site settled prior to 1830, when it was known as Weldon's Orchard or Weldon's Place for Daniel Weldon, owner. In 1834 it became the terminus of a railroad from Virginia.
