Peacock's Bridge | SE Wilson County over Contentnea Creek approx. 1½ mi. SE of Stantonsburg. A bridge existed there by 1751 and is shown on the Price map, 1808, and on the MacRae map, 1833. There Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton's British dragoons and Col. James Gorham's militia engaged in a skirmish, May 1781. Known for a time as Ruffin's Bridge. |
