Marathonformer community in N New Hanover County near Castle Hayne. An agricultural colony of Greek farmers was est. there by Hugh MacRae of Wilmington in the early twentieth century, but it was not successful.
Maratonvillage of the Moratuc Indian tribe, is shown on the Smith map, 1624, as being on the Chowan River in present E Chowan County downstream from Rockyhock Creek. The Comberford map, 1657, places the village farther upstream.
