Long Islandcommunity in E Catawba County. Post office operated there from 1894 to 1949. Former site now covered by waters of Cowan's Ford Dam. The post office and many homes were moved to nearby higher ground. Named for an island in the Catawba River. An earlier post office approx. 1 mi. away was known as Shawnee, 1888-1904.
