| Nottoway River |
rises in Virginia and flows SE into Hertford County, where it joins Blackwater River on the Gates-Hertford county line to form Chowan River. Nottoway, meaning "adders" or "rattlesnakes," was a name applied by Algonquian neighbors to Indians in the area.
