Dhaulagiri mountain rising above the trail

Mountain landscape in Nepal. In the horizon are several peaks, the left-most of is Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world. The mountainsides are rather barren. A trail --both for trekkers and for horses --snakes between the mountains.

This trail was once part of the old salt trade route, running between Tibet, the Nepali mountains, and the Indian plains. The route is no longer in use as the Chinese takeover of Tibet resulted in trade restrictions between Tibet and Nepal, and trade with India became more practical due to increased production of salt in India and better road networks.
