Gilliam Countywas name proposed in 1872-73 legislature for new county to be created out of Granville, Warren, and Franklin Counties. Name selected to honor Judge Robert Gilliam of Oxford. Bill failed to pass, but in 1881 Vance County was formed with similar boundaries.
