Opposition Party [1]
Opposition Party
The Opposition Party was the name temporarily adopted in 1860 by North Carolina members of the Whig Party [2], which had practically dissolved over the slavery [3]issue. Its supporters nominated John Pool [4] for governor [5] on a platform of union and an end to sectional agitation. Pool lost to John W. Ellis [6], the Southern Rights candidate.
