Lost Provinces

"Lost provinces" was a term applied to the region of North Carolina consisting of the counties of Currituck [2], Camden [3], Pasquotank [4], Perquimans [5], Chowan [6], and Gates [7]. Because of their location north of the Albemarle Sound and the presence of rivers [8]and swamps [9], they were isolated and difficult to reach except through Virginia.
