Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings

by Wiley J. Williams, 2006

Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (LabCorp [2]), with headquarters in Burlington and facilities in Charlotte [3] and Research Triangle Park [4], is one of the world's largest clinical laboratory companies. It was incorporated in Delaware in 1973 as DCL Health Laboratories. The present name was adopted in 1995 through the merger of Roche Biochemical Laboratories and national Health Laboratories Holdings, Inc. Other acquisitions followed, including Genetic Design of Greensboro [5](1996), Coastal Medical of Florida (1998), and Pathology Laboratories of San Diego (2000).

LabCorp provides a full range of clinical, anatomical, and substance-abuse tests to individual physicians, managed-care organizations, hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Medicare and Medicaid account for about 16 percent of LabCorp's revenues. Through a national network of laboratories, LabCorp offers more than 4,400 different clinical laboratory tests. In 2006 the company had annual revenues of more than $3 billion and employed 24,000 people across 20 states.
