Iceberg

by William S. Powell, 2006

On 30 Jan. 1940 an iceberg as large as a small island and extending six feet above the surface of the water was sighted in the Atlantic Ocean off Salter Path on Bogue Banks [2] (Carteret County [3]). Local resident Rufus Sewell, who had previously made several trips to the Arctic, stated that if the visible ice was six feet above the water, approximately 50 feet of ice was beneath the water. The iceberg was drifting westward.
