Old Sneedsboroughabandoned town in SE Anson County on Pee Dee River. Laid out in 1795 to be at the head of navigation on the Pee Dee River and named for Honora Sneyd, stepmother of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, founder of the town. Navigation was not developed sufficiently, and the town declined after about 30 years. Post office est. about 1803; closed 1883. Sneedsborough was famous for its inn. John J. McRae, governor of Mississippi (1854-58) and a member of U.S. and Confederate Congresses, was born there. See also McFarlan.
