Wococon Island | appears on the White map, 1585, as composed of parts of the present Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands in Hyde and Carteret Counties. Port Grenvil, which see, formed its N limit and Wococon Inlet (an inlet, now closed, in Portsmouth Island) the S limit. Name probably derived from the Indian word wahkahikani (enclosed place; stockade). Appears as Gordens Island on the Smith map, 1624. See also Portsmouth Island. |
